Aluminium alloys are used extensively due to their high strength-to-weight ratio. On the other hand, pure aluminium metal is much too soft for such uses and it does not have the high tensile strength that is needed. In this study, Electric Discharge Alloying (EDA) is used to modify the surface of aluminium with the help of tool electrodes manufactured by powder metallurgy (P/M) process. Surface alloying by material transfer during Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) has emerged as a key research area in the last decade.

Electrodes have been made of W-Cu-Cr metal powders of 325 and 200 mesh sizes. The investigated process parameters are composition, compaction load, pulse on-time and peak current settings. Measurements of Material Transfer Rate (MTR), Tool Wear Rate (TWR) and Surface Roughness (Ra) were undertaken on the EDM-ed specimens.
